This book is about a family who just had a little baby boy and the older sibling, who is a girl, wakes up to hear the baby crying. She goes into the baby's room to try and calm him down and get him to go back to sleep. She sings him a song to try and get him to settle down and stop crying. The mother brings hiim a bottle and sings to him as well. Soon the baby is asleep again.

I enjoyed this book because it was an African American family in the story. Usually we see books portraying white show more families. It's a short, cute book that rhymes and has a happy ending.

For my classroom extension I would ask my students if they have any siblings that may wake up in the middle of the night. I would ask them what they do to try and comfort there sibling. We could write about this in our journals.

Summary:

In this story, a new baby brother wakes his sister in the middle of the night. Like a good older sister she went and took care of her baby brother by holding him, kissing him, and playing with him. Eventually the mother comes to the room with a bottle and rocks the baby to sleep, but the sister stays in the room until he's in his crib asleep and she leaves the room and turns out the light.

Personal Response:

I loved this book. It's such a sweet, caring story. This would be a good show more book for children who are expecting a new baby in the family. This would also show kids how to help out their parents when they have a younger sibling.

Classroom Extension:

1. For one activity we could all sit in a circle and talk about our siblings and if they ever have trouble sleeping or wake up in the middle of the night and what we could do if that happens.
2. Another activity we could do is draw our siblings and write about them.
