This fast and easy read is rather delightful with narration by both authors giving their sides to life's experiences. Mary comes across to me as less articulate and facile in language, but James as more of a sore loser and generally selfish and, well, "raging". Matalin is so adoring of Cheney and the Bushes even looking back from the Obama era that it beggars belief. Their mutual love for Louisiana is one of their adorable similarities and opinions on pets one of their lesser known quirks show more that makes this a great read even if you are not a political junkie. show less
I'm not sure why this book was published. Don't get me wrong - I'm not writing the book off completely, it's just that the whole premise of the book is a mother writing letters to her children so that they will have something of her (and of her own mother by proxy) to hold onto as they grow up. As such, it is a deeply personal and intimate look at the relationship of one particular woman with her two daughters and was probably only published because the author is something of a political show more celebrity. The letters themselves are full of cliches and stereotypes but one can't help liking at least some of the sentiments in them. The book is good for a short, feel-good read but not anything of much significance, either in subject or style. show less

5498. All's Fair Love, War, and Running for President, by Mary Matalin and James Carville with Peter Knobler (read 10 Sep 2017) Ths book was published in 1994, and is an account of the Clinton-Bush presidential race in 1992. What am I doing reading it over 20 years after it was written? Hey, it's political history and tells an excellent account of a fantastic race. I admit that half of the book is by Mary Matalin, and that half was not enjoyable reading--but I knew how it would end so I kept show more that in mind as I slogged through Mary's Republican mouthings. The whole book is so authentic and conveys so well the intensity of the race. And I knew that the authors did get married on Nov 25, 1993, and have children now. When I finished the book I felt as if I had been through the campaign--it was surprising how much I remembered of the events of 1992, and this is an excellent history of the year and the race. show less
Excellent expose of what it's like on a presidential campaign. If you liked West Wing especially Season 7 you would enjoy this. Well written.
