The closest thing to a culinary herb bible I've seen. Slap another 200 pages of medicinal information on it, recover tens of thousands of years of lost human lore that we've effaced with industrial drugs and food, add a few more glossy pictures, and this would approach perfection. To the time machine! (Time herb?)

On the whole, the Twentieth Century was not an auspicious time for herbs, except of the illegal smoked variety: until a few decades ago, the only herbs in the average kitchen were called Robertson’s, and came dried in little bottles.

There has been a herbal revival, and the shelves are glutted with books and manuals – but most of them are no help whatsoever when it comes to cultivation of the plants, concentrating instead on décor, beauty, health and obscure culinary uses.

Although show more McVicar is English, and covers obscure herbs like Good King Henry, Woad and Goat’s Rue, she is absolutely sound on all the practicalities.

There is a recipe suggestion for almost every herb – even strange ones like Shiso – plus medicinal, decorative and cosmetic uses, but more interesting to the gardening and cooking enthusiast are the informative sections on propagation.

Natural habitat, pests and diseases, maintenance, garden cultivation, harvesting, companion planting, warnings and , very important, container growing, are all well covered, as well as various designs of herb garden.

My only criticism is that the book is alphabetized under the Latin names, so Yarrow [Achillea millefolium] is at the front while Chase Tree [Vitex agnus] is at the back – fortunately the index is excellent.

Attractive photographs, a glossary and a wealth of practical information make this book a must for all gardeners, cooks, and armchair enthusiasts.

Super! I have several good herb cookbooks, but this is the best organized of any I have seen. Also includes recipes for using stevia from the garden in baking, which I have been looking for. Of course, now I need more herbs for the garden...

Jekka is the queen of herbs for a reason and this book delivers that knowledge to the home gardner.
Displaying herbs in a beautiful layout along side information for growing, cultivating, culinary and medicinal uses this book is a great resource for a beginner and intermediate grower.
