I have read another biography of Bowles (_An Invisible Spectator_), but this one is much more personal, more penetrating. As Dillon interviews Bowles for a biography on his wife Jane and then becomes obsessed with the author himself, she delves into what makes him who he is each time she sees him. Charismatic and yet often opaque, wrapped up in his non-native Morocco, we see a Bowles heretofore unseen. An amazingly illuminating portrait!
Ultimately disappointing, though not uninteresting. I found Dillon's analysis of Cassatt's paintings very weak and that dampened my enthusiasm somewhat.
liked him better than her.
