This book of the Little Guides series introduces readers to the extraordinary diversity and natural history of living amphibians and reptiles. At 320 pages, the guide is comprehensive, and explores each of the major groups of extant amphibians (salamanders, frogs and toads, and the limbless caecilians) and reptiles (crocodilians, turtles and tortoises, tuataras, lizards, snakes, and amphisbaenians). Introductory pages consider the overall biology and evolutionary origins of the major groups. show more Most of the book is organized taxonomically; for each major group (e.g., taxonomic order and suborder), representative species and genera are explored in each of the families. Excellent color illustrations and photographs accompany explanatory text. Much of the focus is on natural history, i.e., appearance, geographic location, habitat, diet, behavior, and reproduction. While not intended as a field guide (since its scope is worldwide), the book nevertheless is a useful reference work that would enable a reader to identify most any major type of reptile or amphibian encountered. As a handy, one- volume reference work or introduction, this guide has no equal. Its author, the eminent herpetologist Harold G. Cogger, was curator and deputy director of the Australian Museum in Sydney. This guide is entirely suitable for adults and adolescents. show less

I adore this book! Sometimes, when I'm sick or bored, I'll pick it up and just read through it. Sad, yes, but I know a ton more about animals than I ever though I would.
Humans have always relied heavily on animals. We have worshipped them, befriended them, sacrificed them, domesticated them, eaten them, hunted them, drawn them, and written about them. We have come to appreciate them, especially in their natural habitats, as an essential part of our world. They are creatures that deserve our respect and reward our curiosity. As intrinsic as they are to the ecological balance of our world, animals are under threat from their human admirers, and in dire need show more of our help. Habitat destruction spells disaster for many species, leaving them teetering on the brink of extinction. Only through a greater understanding of the fragile balance that exists between species and their habitats will it become possible for us to ensure the survival of our precious wildlife heritage. This comprehensive encyclopedia presents a wide-ranging survey of four major groups of living things: mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The text is written by a team of international experts in the zoological sciences. It is carefully constructed to be read and appreciated by everyone with an interest in natural history. Complemented by superb full-color photographs by the world's leading wildlife photographers, and specially commissioned illustrations, maps, and diagrams, this stunning volume gives an up-to-date overview of nature's most enthralling creatures. A team of internationally renowned authorities has provided the text for this publication. The photographs have been provided by some of the world's leading wildlife photographers. The original illustrations are by specialist wildlife artist Dr David Kirshner. Book jacket. Humans have always relied heavily on animals.
