A Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians: Eastern and Central North America (Peterson Field Guides) by Roger Conant
Illustrations are fairly top notch with some decent information to back it up. Certainly a more comprehensive and detailed field guide for herpetologists or reptile lovers. This was the textbook we used in Herpetology class.
Fun way to learn about coloration of reptiles and amphibians. You'll need some color pencils!

Recommended by the SO Student Manual: "All specimans on the Official List are in both of the Peterson Guides."
