This is one of those books that is never going to be an edge-of-the-chair page turner. On the other hand, it's filled with useful information that someone who is working with English, writing or printing might find extremely useful. For example, an A2 piece of paper is 420 mm by 595 mm (p. 27). Or, information about Spanish and Iberian languages. Basically this book is a compendium of material that printers at the Oxford University Press (OUP) found useful at one time or another. I've used show more it in editing work to look up details that weren't available elsewhere in my library. The book is a larger version of a work called Hart's Rules. Hart was a biggie at OUP from 1883 to 1915 and is considered "one of the most influential printers in the last two centuries." I'd recommend the book to anyone who knows they will be needing a lot of detail and who will be rubbing shoulders with European-influenced printing. show less

A unique and invaluable reference. Fantastic for all those little mix-ups in language that you can't quite remember at a time when you most need to get them right.

Trascrivo quello che avevo scritto per le gloriose Hart’s Rules for Compositors and Readers at the University Press, Oxford, delle quali questa è l’edizione per il nuovo secolo (l’altra, nata nel 1893, è andata più o meno in pensione dopo 40 edizioni in quasi 110 anni): essenziale. Non scrivo ‘essenziale’ per tutti i libri ma questo è uno di quelli che conviene davvero avere a portata di mano. Spiega, in modo un po’ all’antica, come scrivere in BrE”. La differenza della show more Oxford Guide è che non è più spiegata all’antica ed è molto più completa (si passa da 180 a 600 pagine). Qui ci sta tutto quello che deve sapere un revisore di lingua inglese per poter fare il suo lavoro, e quindi tutto quello che dobbiamo sapere noi traduttori se 1) non abbiamo un revisore, 2) non vogliamo che il nostro revisore ci faccia fuori per giusta causa.

Risponde a tantissimi dubbi: come si scrive il plurale di dictum?, si dice do (mus.), o doh? si dice doll’s house o dolls’ house? Dormeuse vuole il corsivo?, Dovecot o dovecote? come si scrive Dushambe? Dark ages vuole le maiuscole? e daguerreotype? DORA o DoRA? Utilissimo. Per il momento ho solo la prima edizione (piccola e costosa era, ma valeva comunque la pena) ma il fatto di scrivere questa recensione mi ha convinto a ordinare la nuova edizione, che è stata completamente aggiornata show more e ampliata mi dicono. Già quello vecchio è un libro che tengo sempre a portata di mano, nel senso che devo solo allungare il braccio per prenderlo. Fra un paio di settimane, la nuova edizione prenderà il suo posto…
