Short biography
DMC thread has a very long history. The "D" stands for "Dollfus", the surname of the 2 brothers whose fabric painting business began in 1746. Their nephew, Daniel Dollfus married Anne-Marie Mieg in 1800 and combined both their names into one surname, Dollfus-Mieg. The "M" stands for Mieg. And the "C" represents the French word for company, Cie, thus Dollfus-Mieg & Cie or DMC.

You can't judge a book by its title sometimes. Besides domestic animals, there's a village and a vardo (arguably domestic animal related, with horses), frogs, fish, wild birds, and insects. Butterflies, bees, katydids, ants, butterflies, swans, storks, angelfish, puffer fish, and a few I don't recognise. Like all DMC cross stitch books, the designs are (for the most part-- sugar pig, I'm looking at you) attractive, and presented with coloured squares (not symbols) and an appended list of show more colour numbers that the stitcher can match to the picture. show less
Expensive as color charts are, you gotta have them if you're going to order fiber mail order, or match stuff on half finished pieces, or design your own stuff.
"This booklet contains 50 embroidery motifs, all of them specially created to decorate spotted materials."
