What Did They Mean By That? is a dictionary style compilation of terms, some no longer in use, that a genealogist may come across during research. It's a great idea but the execution leaves a bit to be desired. There are only a couple pronunciation guides and entries are not strictly alphabetic. Sources of definitions are not included. Some definitions seem unnecessary: e.g. "stallion: See horse" or the description of a wheelbarrow.

Drake often uses see also or (q.v.) but sometimes there show more does not appear to be any connection. Sometimes the reader is referred to entries which are not in the book. The entries "press to death", "press glass", "press into service" have nothing to do with each other but each one refers the reader to the other two. Some definitions are just bewildering. Protestants are defined as "any religion group that is other than Roman Catholic". Does he mean to include Jews, Muslims and Hindus in that group?

There are typos and typesetting errors. On page 233 five terms are repeated. This looks like a rough draft which definitely needs a proofreader or copy editor. While the book may be helpful it might be a good idea to research other sources and verify the meanings.
