For a book with the words "train your puppy" in it it fails to be a true instruction book... more of an introduction to what a puppy is which isn't very useful... unless you are in the position of never having had a dog and need an intro before getting one... which is NOT me I would like detailed instructions to start implementing immediately with my 9 week old lab/coonhound pup. The instructions it does have aren't bad but could be more detailed and could cover more topics. It is also leash show more heavy which throws me off because none of the other training materials I have read have mentioned a leash for absolutely everything, even your pup just being in your house... which I dont see as necessary. show less
I have the Golden Anniversary Edition, 16th edition, Published in 1979. I think I got this book new about then.

This was when I started to really develop my love of dogs. I also dipped my toe into showing a Newfie I had at the time. The book has a sense of nostalgia that adds to my value of it.

Pictures are in two sections, not with the listing of the dog. Almost all breeds seem to have a good page or two of history on the breed which is nice. It boasts, ‘322 Illustrations including – show more for the first time – 113 Photographs in Color!’ The pictures are not up to par with ones in current books, but they tried. All the breeds recognized by the AKC are covered. Each dog standard is covered in detail.

New copies I am sure are a lot better, maybe I will get lucky and find one to add to my collection of books on dogs.

A good standard reference for most of the recognized breeds. Not an immensely detailed volume in terms of the individual breeds but does contain all of the essentials. Illustrations are adequate.
