I love this book. Have read and sampled it multiple times in the past twenty-some years. 'Nuf said. And again tonight, trying to determine the origins of Charlie, our recent rescue, a probably "Yorkie-X." But that "X" element remains elusive. Whatever - we so LOVE this little girl!
A fact-based look at eight legendary creatures.

This book is well organized and presents its discussions clearly. Each section covers one creature, with a look at the myth/folklore and gives possible real-world explanations about how the legend came about, like narwhal horns contributing to stories about unicorns.

The only thing that keeps me from giving the book four stars is the paucity of pictures. Having more pictures of the real animals beside the legendary ones would have helped show more illustrate the authors' points.

My copy says copyright and published in 2008. Billed as a comprehensive guide to over 350 breeds with over 1000 superb images. When browsing this book, you immediately notice the nicest and most interesting pictures compared to my other encyclopedia books. Even though the beginning of the book has the usual info you find to help prepare a new person on dogs, the pictures make this stand out.

Breeds are given full or half pages with a nice picture. Each breed has a small amount of breed show more origins and breed qualities. Then a small box with Origin, height, weight, exercise level, coat care, registered (KC, FCI, ACKs) and colors. Good selection of dogs, great pictures, but I like more history and information. Still a good coffee table and reference book. show less
This is an excellent overview of the many species of wild cat found throughout our world. It has great pictures and clear and informative text. Range maps give you a visual indicator of where the cats can be found in the wild. This might not be a book that you will sit down and read all the way through, but as a basic reference, it is invaluable for anyone with more than a passing interest in wild cats.
