A memoir by the grand old man of bookbinding. This book includes colour prints of most of Middleton's modern designed bindings, as well as some in black-and-white. He is an artist, as well as a craftsman, though he proudly describes himself as the latter.
He is also ingenious in a pinch. "I love cats individually, but en masse they have tried my patience inordinately. On one occasion I found that a pile of newly-bound books which were ready for collection had stuck together, the cause of show more which calamity need not be spelt out. It occurred to me to pour ammonia between them, a cunning wheeze which worked like a charm, and there was no residual staining." show less

An expanded version of the Bird & Bull edition of Middleton's memoirs, which are idiosyncratic but very funny in parts. With some excellent color illustrations of many of his design bindings.
One of the "must have" books of bookbinding techniques. Bernard C. Middleton is among the best-known binders working today, and he has been working in fine binding for more than 60 years. This is the fourth edition, and has been updated and expanded.
