This book contains Howard M. Nixon's Lyell Lectures, as amended and prepared for publication by Mirjam M. Foot. The lectures cover the history of decorated bookbindings in England, with a rather marked emphasis on earlier periods rather than later. Written with much detail and also with a delightfully dry wit which results in more than a few thoroughly amusing lines. While it would have been excellent to see all the images in color, such a large selection of them, even in black and white, is show more most welcome. show less
A well-argued case showing "how bookbindings, in all their variety, reflect the societies in - and the social classes for - which they are made, so that the study of bookbinding history is no mean tributary, but part of the mainstream of social history" (p. 1). Some excellent examples, both illustrated and discussed in the text of Foot's Panizzi lectures.
