Most of this book is an alphabetical list of ground-cover plants with their properties. However, I found the most helpful thing to be set of charts that list the plants by types. So if you want a flowering ground cover that grows in shade, you can look at the two charts, find the ones they have in common, and then read about them in the alphabetical list. As a novice, I found this book really easy to use and helpful.
Encyclopedia for experienced gardeners. Includes 45 lists of plants for specific purposes -- Acid soil, Palms, Order of bloom, Shade, Shrub, Trees, Vines, Weeds, etc. Articles on controls under relevant headings -- Insecticides, Fungicides, etc. This single volume does not include all plants growing in America, much less those growing in gardens. Weeds are considered to have "little value", but the editors make an effort to select plants that may be rare but have comparison value. Different show more groups of gardeners will find much to aid them. Plants are listed alphabetically with common names cross-indexed. show less
