It took me a bit to get into this, and I did appreciate that the audio book was read by Ani herself. There was a ton in here -- some of it troubling, some of it very her, some of it fascinating. I was hoping to know more about her more recent life. I found parts of it inspiring and parts of it problematic. Rambling and ranting. Also strongly opinionated, and attempting amends. She comes across as a real person, warts and all, and I was interested enough to stick with it.

Also, I genuinely show more have no idea how to rate this one. show less
Ani Difranco rocks! If I could pick one role model for my daughter (or son, for that matter), she would definitely be on the short list. Confident, outspoken, willing to call out what's wrong, and able to express those things within a song or a poem.

It's great to see some of her lyrics and poems in a nicely done book format. The conversation with Sekou Sundiata at the end of the book is wonderful. Ani helps us to see double -- beyond the literal. Anything can make us look, but art can make show more us see show less
A wonderful, revealing and entertaining career memoir from Ani. It ends before parenting and much of the 21st Century, including what I wanted to know -- how did she, like me, end up in Louisiana? Hopefully, she will do a follow-up that will reveal that and more. Along with a candid and reflective consideration of abortion, relationships, and the difficulties of recording her voice and acoustic guitar the reluctant entrepreneur averse to self-marketing recalls meeting Prince, touring with show more Maceo Parker, the travails of touring as a solo artist, not fitting in at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival and falling in love with Rome (where "ani" is rude).

arrivederci Ani!

A passionate and intensely intimate memoir about the education of an artist. The author bares her soul and doesn't hesitate to relate even the painful moments of her life. It's clear that she is invested in the telling of tales and her only concern is to explain and carry the narrative onward. The book itself is beautifully rendered and interspersed with selections of poetry and lyrics. The only reason I'm not scoring it higher is because I'm not familiar with the artist and so her story is show more harder to contextualize. Fans of her music will, I'm sure, get a lot more out of this book and feel very connected to the artist's journey. show less
