Good little book on certain subjects. It says about eschatological Judaism, a thoroughly this-worldly religion, that judgement day await those still living. The virtuous dead will be dispatched to the Garden of Eden while the wicked go to punishment in Gehinnom. The coming Messiah will be preceded by economic and social crises, the coming of Elijah, Jewish exiles gathered in, and a cataclysmic war of Gog and Magog then the world is renewed in the Messianic era eternally. De Lange adds that show more Maimonides holds some other opinions about rewards and punishments. Maimonides says that the only way to achieve eternal life (ordinary life will not change except that everything will become easier and people will live longer because they have no worries) is observe all the commandments of the Torah of out perfect love and for no ulterior motive. Spiritual bliss is dependent on the people of Israel being free from domination by world empires. The Messiah will restore sovereignty over the Land of Israel but he will die, with his descendants ruling for thousands of years. De Lange seems to say that those dead will be raised spiritually with their souls being united to God, while the wicked have their souls annihilated. Maimonides is important for Catholic theology as he prefers to use analogical language as does Thomas Aquinas which philosophically speaking about God. show less
Judaism is made up of complex elements. Nicholas de Lange offers a slim, but thorough introduction. After an introduction addressing the question of what is Judaism without over simplifying, de Lange addresses aspects of Judaism chapter by chapter. These elements include the legal tradition, eschatology, theology, and worship. The language and feel of the book is very academic. While this may put off the lay reader, it may make a good introduction and resource for students of religion.
Beautiful illustrations and detailed maps.
Documents Jewish history from ancient times to the mid-1900's. Discusses the diaspora, the Holocaust, and the creation of Israel as a nation. It contains reproductions of art and photographs.
