This (and its H-O companion volume) is probably the definitive reference on American slang, unless you're interested in words beginning with P-Z. Unfortunately, there was a falling out between the editor and the publisher which had to do with the use of profanity ("The F Word" by Jesse Sheidlower was the direct outcome of this dispute), so the last volume was never published. I understand that the Oxford University Press plans to bring it out.
Greatest disappointment is that no further Volumes were produced and the dictionary of slang stopped at the letter O.
See Vol I A - G. No Vol III P - S as of today.
