Terrific and emotional book with two people who are hurting due to baby issues. Georgie is a midwife who loves her job but struggles with infertility, which drove her and her partner apart. Every baby she helps into the world is a joy but also a painful reminder of what she'll never have. The book opens as she faces a complicated case. The department's new consultant joins her to save mother and child, though not without a rocky start between them. Relief over a successful birth has them show more taking comfort in a passionate night together, followed by regrets over what they did. They agree to return to a professional relationship.
Though Dan and Georgie try to stick to their intentions, they find a deep friendship developing between them. Shared meals and easy conversation create a connection neither can deny. They also note that their attraction is still there, though neither wants a relationship. Resistance isn't easy, but they manage. Then Georgie found herself unexpectedly pregnant. Shocked but thrilled to have her dream come true, she wastes no time telling Dan of his impending fatherhood. I ached for Dan, for whom the news brought up terrible memories. During medical school, his girlfriend became pregnant. In a tragic series of events, both she and the baby die, and Dan blames himself. Being responsible for another pregnancy is his worst nightmare.
Once the initial shock is past, Dan and Georgie must learn to work together. Dan is very protective of her, to the point of "helicoptering" at times. Georgie is very independent and often butts heads with Dan over his hovering. I loved their honesty in communicating their feelings and expectations, preventing miscommunications and resentment. When Georgie discovered she was having twins, everything changed. I loved seeing her learn to accept and appreciate Dan's help, while Dan learned to trust Georgie's instincts and judgment. Over the following months, I loved seeing them grow closer. Georgie was the first to suspect her feelings, while Dan tried to ignore his for a long time.
As the pregnancy progressed, complications arose. I ached for Georgie and Dan, whose fears were never far from their minds. I loved the close-knit Labor and Delivery unit and how they all watched out for Georgie. There's a great scene where Dan, who serves as a mentor for a new young doctor, Patrick, is helped through his own crisis by that same doctor. I was on the edge of my seat as they fought for the lives of the babies. I loved the ending and seeing how Georgie and Dan finally admitted their feelings for each other.
The medical details used in the story happen organically, imparting information without me feeling like I'm sitting in a class. I loved the feeling of realism they added and how the worry helped bring Dan and Georgie closer together. I also loved seeing characters from earlier books in the series. It's always good to catch up with previous couples.

Good book. Laura is a doctor who left the job she had when her grandfather had a stroke and needed her help. While caring for him, she did substitute work with the local hospital. When her grandfather died, Laura stayed on, living in the house she inherited and taking care of Millie, his guide dog. When a permanent position opened up, she applied and believed she had an excellent chance of getting it. Then a late applicant came in, and the sure thing wasn't so sure anymore. What's worse, the show more applicant is Tom, an old friend from medical school.
Tom had an excellent job as an ER doctor in London until circumstances made it necessary for him to leave. The position at Yoxburgh seemed heaven-sent until he arrived for his interview and discovered Laura was his competition. Now he feels a bit guilty about stealing the job out from under her.
I loved the first meeting between Laura and Tom. The awkwardness of the situation makes things a little uncomfortable, but they handle it like adults. Having dinner together gave them a chance to catch up on each other's lives. While Laura remembers Tom as something of a ladies' man who seemed determined to add her to his collection, she's stunned to find out that he really cared about her. She had resisted because it would have been far too easy to fall in love with him. Because only one of them will get the job and therefore won't work together, Tom and Laura give in to the sparks that still flare between them. Neither of them expects Laura to be asked to fill in for a doctor going on maternity leave, making them coworkers after all.
I loved that Tom and Laura are mature professionals who put their differences aside. Their methods complement each other, which makes an excellent work environment. It isn't long before they slip back into their old friendship, but with the added complication of irresistible attraction. I enjoyed watching them get to know each other again and the closeness that resulted from it.
But fate doesn't make things easy for them. Tom notices some health issues that, once diagnosed, become potentially career-ending. I ached for Tom, who could only focus on the negative aspects. His growing feelings for Laura contribute to his despair as he contemplates a future without her. Tom tries pushing her away, believing she deserves someone who can give her everything she wants. Laura is much stronger than Tom realizes and refuses to be sidelined. Her empathy and support are fantastic. She also provides the kick in the pants he needs after she gives him unexpected news. I loved seeing Laura fight for him and the emotional exchange as she finally gets through to him. I loved the ending and their determination to face their future together.

This was sweet. Sam and Emelia found themselves in an odd position when the IVF clinic mixed things up. Instead of her late husband's baby, Emelia was pregnant with Sam's. Sam gad been hurt in the past by a woman and was totally against loving anyone again. But he couldn't help falling for the mother of his child. It was really sweet watching Sam and Emelia deal with this accidental situation. I enjoyed their story.
This little Betty Neels novella concerns a British doctor and his temporary receptionist. She is naive and sweet, he is older and keeps his attraction to her secret. Being a novella, there are only mild confusion and misunderstanding before all works out satisfactorily in the end.
