- Rebecca Brown was born on February 14, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is the daughter of Dr. John Zimmerman Brown, Jr. and Kathryn Ormsby Hyde. When she was 17, she went to boarding school in Lausanne, Switzerland, whereshe learned to speak French and met girls from all over the world. Uponreturning to the U.S., Rebecca developed her love of languages when sheearned her B.A. in secondary education, history, French, and Spanish fromthe University of Utah and did postgraduate work in Arabic.
Because of her studies overseas, Rebecca decided to become a teacher andstudied French and history at her alma mater in Utah. For the past 15 years, she's taught junior-high and high-school French and history, and says shegot into serious writing almost by accident.
"I went through a back door to begin my writing career," she says. "In thefirst place, I never liked to write anything -- I only wrote mandatory papersfor school. If anyone had told me I would become a writer, let alone loveit, I would have laughed and dismissed the notion as absolutely absurd andpreposterous. Having said that, I did write letters to my parents while Iwas away at boarding school when I was 17. My mother kept them and one day, after I had become a mother for the second time, she sent me all my oldletters and asked me to write my memories from them for posterity. At thetime I thought she was insane, but because I adore my mother I did as sheasked. By the time I'd finished sorting through all those teenage thoughts, observations and opinions, the seeds of a story had begun to form in mymind. The seed eventually became a novel and was published in 1979. It wascalled The Loving Season, published under the name Rebecca Burton.Naturally, it takes place in Switzerland and France. As soon as I finishedthat novel, I found myself wanting to start another novel entitled By LoveDivided, a World War II romance. A few years later, Harlequin bought anovel, Blind to Love, a story that takes place in Kenya. It's been a loveaffair ever since. I guess the moral of the story is, never underestimate amother's intuition!"
Europe is her favourite locale for her novels. She lived in France andSwitzerland, and has travelled extensively all over Europe, particularlySpain, Italy, the Pyrenees and Sweden. She said "There are so many gorgeousplaces, fascinating people, beautiful languages, culture and history, it'slike trying to choose from a fabulous smorgasboard every time I start towrite a new story. The tastes, smells, sights, music--all of it speaks to me.Every time!"
As Rebecca has kept writing, her talents have not gone unrecognized. She haswon the National Readers' Choice Award, the Romantic Times Reviewers' ChoiceAward, and has been named Utah Writer of the Year. Right now, Rebecca isworking her way toward her 50th novel for Harlequin.

Solid, Short, Semi-Questionable Ending. This is a fairly standard-ish modern royal romance ala a cross between Hallmark and Princess Diaries. And along that vein, it works quite well and particularly given its short-ish (18o ish page) length, manages to pack quite a bit of story into this tale. My biggest question is whether or not the author put too much sex in the tale - even if in just about the most chaste way possible - for it to truly qualify as a "clean romance". Beyond that show more particular point though, truly a well told story with arguably extraneous ending material. But even with these last two points... read it for yourself and decide for yourself. ;) Very much recommended. show less
Good story between two wounded souls. Avery is an archaeologist working on a local dig and living on her grandfather's ranch. Being close to family and friends has been good for her, as she recovers from her painful past. A year earlier she had met Zane Lawson, a former SEAL who is now working for the BLM. She's attracted to him, but is having trouble overcoming her past.
After ten years as a SEAL, Zane is happy to be working law enforcement for the BLM. After a year working across the state show more from his ranch, he's been transferred nearby and will be able to work from his own home. This will finally give him a chance to get to know Avery better. As he is assigned to investigate the thefts of artifacts from the reservation where she works, he looks at it as a perfect opportunity.
Zane soon discovers that what he thought was simple shyness is something much more. He suffers from symptoms of PTSD himself, and recognizes them in Avery. I loved the way he talked to his own doctor and got information on how to help her. His sensitivity to her fears was wonderful, and I loved how he handled them even before she told him what had happened to her. Avery had been in love with Zane for months, but because of what happened feels that a future with him is not possible. When he tells her of his feelings, she knows she has to tell him what happened to her. She worries that it will make him look at her differently, and draw away from her. She's stunned to discover that he had already suspected and that it made no difference to his feelings.
The care with which Zane treats Avery is wonderful. He's sweet and patient and loving, which is exactly what she needs. I loved seeing how it helped Avery. It didn't suddenly make everything go away, but she does feel stronger and more in control. I also loved seeing her be able to turn around and offer the same kind of care to him.
The artifact stealing storyline was very good. I enjoyed the background information on the Crow people that was part of it. I liked the way that Zane made Avery part of the investigation, and how much he came to respect her knowledge. It was pretty obvious from the beginning who the ringleader of the bad guys was, but the investigation itself was interesting. The ending was pretty intense, especially when it was combined with Avery's fears. show less

This was one of the best from the Romance line that I have read in awhile. Most of the time there is a lack of intensity that leaves me wishing there had been a little more heat, but this one had almost everything I could want. There was also a lot of emotional depth. The story starts with Stavros in an extreme state of frustration, thanks to the ultra conservatism of the family business's board of directors. He has a proposal for a new product line, but they refuse to change with the times. show more Having had enough, he quits as the managing director, and heads to his home on the island of Thassos. Shortly after arriving he finds out that a teenager on a local tour has disappeared, and goes to help with the search. Andrea is part of the tour company and also arrives to help with the search. She joins with Stavros to check some of the more remote locations.
Stavros and Andrea are drawn to each other from the moment they met. Her beauty and intelligence light up the dark places in his soul that have only gotten worse with the problems he's been having. Stavros is one of the best looking men Andrea has ever met, and appeals to a side of her that has been dead since she lost her fiance the previous year. Once the rescue mission is over, Stavros wants a chance to get to know Andrea better, but Andrea is cautious. She's already loved and lost once, she's not sure she could do it again. And there are obstacles to a relationship that might be impossible to overcome.
I really liked both Andrea and Stavros. Andrea is an intelligent and independent woman. She grew up with just her father, travelling around the world with him in his work as a mining engineer. They have a very close and loving relationship, and have never spent much time apart. Andrea knows that her father's work in Greece will be done soon and they will be moving away. As a result, she knows that a relationship with Stavros isn't possible for her. But as she spends time with him, she falls fast and hard for him, and is torn because she can't see a way to be with both the men she loves.
Stavros is a wonderful man. He may be rich and powerful, but he is also warm and kind. He loves his family, but he is also frustrated with them. His relationship with his father is especially difficult as the man never seems to have anything good to say to Stavros. When Stavros refuses to fall into line with his father's plans, his father makes threats that hurt Stavros even more.
I loved the connection and the growing feelings between Andrea and Stavros, The empathy that she has for Stavros's unhappiness is strong. She also has a really big protective streak for him. I loved her care for him when he gets hurt, and her efforts to help him with his business show just how quickly her love for him happens. That love also shows in the way she trusts him, especially in regards to his ex-girlfriend. I loved the way that Stavros fell so hard for Andrea. His respect for her intelligence and independence is obvious. He wants her to stay in Greece, but understands her love for her father. I loved the fact that he doesn't try to force her to choose between them. I was a bit worried about how they were going to make it work. The resolution was great and felt quite realistic.
One of my favorite "characters" in the book was the island of Thassos. I loved the descriptions which were so vivid that I could easily picture it in my head as I read. show less

Damn straight I'm considering this a Holiday book - it takes place in early Nov and ends sometime in February! The holidays definitely happen.
Even if we don't see them :whistles:
Once again I decided to reread a former Harlequin Romance favorite of mine. According to my teen reading journal I read this for the first time when I was 14, so guess what it's been 20 years.
I think I see why it enchanted me enough to add to my "keep" list oh so long ago. Adorable moppet children, cynical doting show more father, beautiful talented heroine and the hero has to beg forgiveness. This is young teen Lexie catnip.
On rereading at 34 though I find myself pretty peeved at the dad. Sir you literally keep stating "don't worry we'll keep it secret!" then have the audacity to get upset when she rejects the casual affair?
YOU GAVE HER THE LITERAL DEFINITION OF A CASUAL AFFAIR.
I forgot just how long they spend apart though, which is weird in a Harlequin Romance. She gets very ill at one point and when he is basically "no, bad idea this is bad" she takes a restorative vacation for three months...only to return to him offering to set her up as his mistress like this is the 1800s and he's a bloody Duke!
Yeah. I'd peace out too.
I do wonder if not for the kids what pretense either of them would have to see the other.
So overall while not a bad old timey Harlequin Romance (it's almost 30 years old), and while indid appreciate the fact it's set in Seattle, not England, it's not a book I'll be rereading any time soon. Not even in 20 years. show less
