One of my ancestors (1537-1591). That's why my daughter bought it for me as a gift. Interesting from that perspective. Haven't finished it yet. I will leave a better review when I am finished. Good so far. He was born in Spain and became a governor of a province in New Spain ( Mexico ). Apparently he enslaved Native Americans ( although the author says this accusation was to smear him). Others claim he did. The grievance against him by the native population of Native Americans is said to show more have led to the Chichimeca War. Some don't realize that there was a Mexican Inquisition in the New World. He was one of about 50 who died. Apparently he was a Jew who supposedly ( crypto-Jew? ) converted to Catholicism. According to wikipedia, "the charge of concealing that his relatives secretly practiced Judaism was upheld. Sentenced to exile, he was sent back to the court's jail, where he died a year later." I haven't gotten to that part of the book yet. You can google him: Luis de Carvajal and read about him on Wikipedia. show less
