5789. The Many Faces of World War I, by Irving Werstein (read 2 May 2022) This 184-page book was published in 1963 so it looks back on the first World War with a certain perceptive and in a very elementary way, making snap judgments on many things, some of which are questionable. Obviously it deals with many momentous events--many of which I have read whole books about--in a paragraph or two. The first World War has often been a consuming interest of mine and yet I found this little book of show more much interest, reminding me of the many subjects it touches lightly upon and which are of great importance. This book would be a good book for a youth who knows little of those fantastic events occurring in the years 1914 to 1918 to be introduced to a consideration of them. show less
4810. I Accuse The Story of the Dreyfus Case, by Irving Werstein (read 27 Mar 2011) This is written for juveniles and is defective in that it does not pretend to be objective, whereas objectivity would overwhelmingly show Dreyfus was innocent and wronged. This book is very pro-Dreyfus--I just think it should have tried to show its position by a more factual presentation. The best book I have read on the case is The Affair, by Jean-Denis Bredin (read 19 Mar 1986). Also very good is Dreyfus A show more Family Affair, by Michael Burns, (read 6 Jun 1992). This book is OK for juveniles but the books I cite are far better reading. show less
One of the first Landmark books of my father's that I read as a youth was Francis Marion, Swampfox of the Revolution. This tells the story of Jack Wade and his time with the Swampfox. I need to determine if this is supposed to be based on an real person and incident or just historical fiction.
