It's been a few years since I read Gutierrez's book, but I remain favorably impressed by the research he did to describe marriage and sexuality as New Mexico's dominant culture shifted from Native American to Catholic. Much was lost in the process, although, fortunately, more so than in most parts of the present-day United States, a strong remnant of the old ways survives and even prospers.
