An extensive collection of German literary ballads (by both well-known and lesser known poets) along with some anonymous folk ballads, lavishly illustrated by the German painter and illustrator Friedrich Hechelmann, whose light-filled, moody illustrations remind me somewhat of German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. Simply lovely both to read and to look at.
