Nat Shapiro (1922–1983)

Shapiro uses the voices of the musicians themselves to tell the story of the birth of jazz; they talk about the rough backgrounds that shaped them, how they worked and played together and individually, and how each of them influenced the rest. For the jazz buff, this is a great insight to the lives of the masters.

When I think of all the time people spent compiling, editing and publishing books full of information that we can now google on the Internet, it makes me cry. This 8-volume set listed song names, lyricist, composer, publisher, and information like; first performance, best seller status, awards ...) Very useful in its day.

For those bitter moments and when you need a putdown!
