Doctor Helen Roseveare, affectionately called Mama Luka, pioneered vital medical work in the Rain forests of the Belgian Congo – now the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Throughout her eight years in training for the mission field and her first twelve years in Congo Helen Roseveare had prayed that God would give her a mountain top experience of his glory and power. However, after enduring civil war and having to start from the beginning again, and later when caring for her elderly mother, she show more realised that God’s work is done in the valleys.
He gives us the valleys and we are to dig the ditches (2 Kings 3: 16), trusting that they will be filled with life–giving water at the appropriate time.
This is an inspiring story because it shows those times when God’s blessings seem withdrawn – they are subsequently shown to have been there all the time.
If you have ever experienced times when God’s call on your life seems remote, or you are encountering trials and problems, you will find refreshment from Helen’s pen. She shows how ‘trusting in the Lord’ can be a gritty, rewarding drama rather than a wispy platitude. show less

Despite being simple and short, this small work is not lacking in power and conviction. Easy to read, using simple language but the concepts are profound. A worth-while read for any Christian.
In a world that screams, “Get all you can!”, we have forgotten how to be satisfied. The more junk and stuff we accumulate, the more we realize it does not satisfy. It is not enough. We are trying to fill a void with the wrong thing. The void can only be filled by a restored relationship with the God who made us and provided a way for us to be reconciled to Him. Helen Roseveare goes beyond this to say He is enough for all life situations.
This book is short but dynamic. In this book, Helen show more Roseveare reminds us that God’s grace is enough to carry us through this life and safely bring us home. Far from the health, wealth and prosperity teaching that has bought into the materialism that has consumed our culture, the teaching found here reminds us that we are being conformed to the image of Christ through our sufferings. And God is with us showering us with His grace every step of the way. It is enough to satisfy our needs.
I would highly recommend this book. New believers will have their eyes opened and be prepared for the trials that they will encounter. Seasoned saints will be reminded of God’s care for His children as their hearts resonate with Dr. Roseveare. Another refreshing aspect of this book is the honesty of the author with her own struggles. I also enjoyed the way she ended each chapter with an appropriate hymn. Topics covered in this book include the following : salvation, assurance, emotional support, pleasing God, happiness, contentment and finding our sufficiency in God. This would be a great book to buy multiple copies and hand out to people who need encouragement. show less

Helen Roseveare's incredible diary covering August 1964 - January 1965 when she and her colleagues continued their work in the face of a rebellion against the movement. Very moving story and a real testimony to her faith standing firm and growing under huge pressure.
