The vests are lovely; I bought this because I want to make the cover vest (the Celtic Lattice pattern) someday. Since I haven't made any of the vests yet, I can't speak to the accuracy of the pattern writing.
However, telling people to change the needle size if they want a larger or smaller vest, rather than actually designing the pattern in multiple sizes? That's poor design. Using a different sized needle doesn't just change the gauge; it changes the stiffness/drape of the fabric. Since I show more don't care to spend my crafting time on creating a loose shoddy fabric, this book's been set aside until I have the time/inclination to adapt the patterns so they fit me *and* use an appropriate gauge for the yarn. show less

Folk Shawls: 25 knitting patterns and tales from around the world (Folk Knitting series) by Cheryl Oberle
A must-have book for any knitter. Patterns are well-written and easy to follow, lend themselves to variation and experimentation (handspun? fat yarn? skinny yarn? yarn of a different fiber?) as well. I've worn out one copy, my second is looking rather tired now as well. Even if you only knit one shawl per year you'll enjoy this book!
Folk Vests: 25 Knitting Patterns & Tales from Around the World (Folk Knitting series) by Cheryl Oberle
Beautiful vests and varied, from simple to involved. The one caveat is that sizing is done by changing needle sizes rather than doing the math, which alters the texture too much for my taste. Worth doing the math myself.
This is a wonderful book for the beginner knitter. There is some variation in difficulty, but there are at least a dozen great "first projects" in this book. Shawls are also nice for the beginning knitter because the stitch gauge is a bit more forgiving, than it would be for a fitted sweater. Each sweater has a large color photo, and the shawl to be knitted is clearly displayed. Each pattern has written instructions and charts for certain parts of the shawl. I've knit several shawls from show more this book and loved every one of them. show less
