What a pleasant surprise! I picked this up at the library a couple of days ago on a lark, and much to my surprise it's quite wonderful!

Jean is a late twentyish Parisian writer, single, and looking for love. This is a collection of stories about his life, some 2 pages, some much longer. But it is delightfully witty, self-referential, and sometimes touching. A great cast of fun supporting characters. Clearly I'm at odds with the other reviewers on this page and I can't wait to find and read show more the next one! show less

This was a wonderful surprise. Beautiful cartooning, and Jean is so human it hurts. Oh, and it is SUPER Frenchy. As in the book practically smells like brioche and expensive cigarettes.
I found these vignettes of the life of Monsieur Jean to be a bore. I wondered why I was wasting my time and I didn't end up finishing the book. I generally find examinations of the little details of everyday life to be pretty interesting because they offer an opportunity to reflect on your own life happenings. But I guess I wasn’t going for slacker lifestyle of Monsieur Jean. I did however, like the artwork. Such verve! Such style! And I found the women’s siege of the castle to be très show more amusant. While I highly recommend that you check out the artwork of DuPuy and Berberian (http://www.duber.net/index1.htm) I do not recommend reading this book. show less
A popular series of French graphic novels, the stories of a thirty-something Parisian writer garnered creators Dupuy and Berberian numerous awards over the past 20 years including a prestigious Angoulême International Comics award. Originally published in 2000, Monsieur Jean—The Singles Theory works perfectly a stand alone volume to meet Jean in a series of insightful and humorous tales. His friend Felix, bitter from a recent break up, moves in. Seemingly inspired by The Odd Couple, the show more vignettes often showcase Felix's struggles and Jean's efforts to help. Funny in the Seinfield vein, the simple, two color Dupuy and Berberian art matches perfectly with the subject and content of the dialogue-centric stories. show less
