An interesting window into the early private lives of Samuel Clemens and Olivia Langdon which can't quite show very much about Olivia but does show that Samuel Clemens in pursuit of a goal was more manipulative than honest. Whether he was or was not able to interpret a woman's view is not definitively proved by this book, but strongly suggested. In any event it is a portrait of American lives and intellectual pursuits that are often left out of evaluations of the 'Victorian' US.
