The Wall Street Journal Guide to the End of Wall Street as We Know It: What You Need to Know About the Greatest Financial Crisis of Our Time--and How to Survive It by Dave Kansas
This brief exposition to the recent meltdown on Wall Street is a good, clear, and straightforward explanation. The complexity of the market will not get simpler and the layperson must individually prepare themselves.
Kansas does get Obama completely wrong; he maintains Obama's crew is well-poised to deal with the crisis. In fact, by every objective economic measure, Obama's regime has resulted in higher minority employment, increasing debt and deficit, and has not ensured that a financial show more meltdown will occur again. show less

The Wall Street Journal Complete Money and Investing Guidebook (The Wall Street Journal Guidebooks) by Dave Kansas
This is an excellent primer for anyone who wants to learn more about investing. It's concise and complete at the same time. There are parts that highlights WSJ's resource as expected, but there is sufficient explanation about every aspect of the investment world including history, investment vehicles, risks, retirement. The author even sprinkles a little well place humor here and there, just enough to give you a chuckle but without making it sound frivolous.
As an added bonus, this book gives show more a very good reading recommendation list at the end of each chapter. show less

The Wall Street Journal Complete Money and Investing Guidebook (Wall Street Journal Guidebooks) by Dave Kansas
While there is a lot of foundational knowledge in this book, it unfortunately has dated a little bit. Being published in 2005, it does not take into account the 2008 financial crisis or anything since. Some references are dated too. Otherwise, still some good information about the basics.
