About the Author
The first civilian to be awarded the Army Silver Star, Vern Haugland was an Associated Press correspondent in World War II and served as the AP's aviation editor for more than 21 years. He was made an honorary member of the Eagle Squadron Association.

The author chronicles his 42 days of wandering the jungle of New Guinea, facing near starvation, and overcoming numerous physical and mental obstacles. Haugland was awarded the Silver Star for his accomplishment.
The book is a very quick read and hard to put down. It's among other things, as story of faith, as well as perseverance.
