- A diplomat's daughter, Evangeline Bell married diplomat David K.E. Bruce in 1945. She spoke numerous languages due to her upbringing in a dozen countries, and was a major success as her husband's partner and hostess in ambassador postings in France, Germany, Britain, and China. Her elegant parties in Washington, D.C. attracted the capital's leading political, journalism, and literary figures. Many people were thus surprised when Evangeline Bruce published her biography of Napoleon and Josephine as she seemed an improbable author and the book had been written over more than 20 years.

Well writen and enjoyable. It is more than the story of its title in the sense that as the lives of the couple unfold a reader who is not very familiar with the history of France of that era gets a nice overview of that whole time in French society and politics.
This is an excellent history book and a good story. This is a book that readers of historical fiction could enjoy. The story of their courtship and marriage and Napoleon's dramatic rise is always fascinating given the background of the French revolution. How did France move from eliminating the aristocracy, establishing a Republic, and then immediately fall behind a leader whose ultimate power far surpassed that of the Royal family and certainly spent far more public money than the Royal show more family ever had? The story of their spendid marriage and the vast amounts of money spent on it sets the stage. This was however , at least initially a true love match and the bond between the two remained strong for many years. It is a fascinating story. show less
A wonderfully-written overview of the period, both sweeping and intimate. If you read only one book about Josephine and Napoleon and the Napoleonic Era, this, in my opinion, is the one.
This impeccably researched book gives remarkable insight into one of history's most fascinating love stories. The Reign of Terror, post-revolutionary France and Napoleon's extensive military campaigns are vividly described as these two historical personalities are brought to life.
