The Lost Continent: The BBC's Europe Editor on Europe's Darkest Hour Since World War Two by Gavin Hewitt
Great title! Good counterpart to Bootle's "Trouble with Europe", this is more historical rather than analytical/predictive, includes some great pen-portraits, especially of Berlusconi and his antics. The serious point emerging is about the EU's threat to sovereignty:e.g. both Papandreou and the risible Berlusconi were elected leaders bulldozed out of office by the EU high heijuns. Hewitt shows well how the EU project was rooted in Europe's recovery from Nazism and the Soviet threat and has show more failed to evolve much since.
I was looking for a book that argued the case in favour of the European Union. Still looking! show less

This book is a real insite into life as a news correspondent, Gavin Hewitt tells a different side to the stories he has covered in the news, a side that could never be broadcast over the airwaves!! Many of the episodes in the book hint at the moral dilemmas faced by news teams, such as how involved they should get in famine and war, and the devices they use to get their stories, but Hewitt does not go into much detail about his personal views.
