This is a catalogue for an American touring exhibition of Haniwa, ancient Japanese clay figures, held at The Asia Society in 1959.
'Haniwa, "clay cylinders," were apparently created to be set up on or around these burial mounds. They are for the most part exactly what their name incidates... but a fair number of them were topped with representational sculpture of a distinctive type. It is these pieces which have captured the attention of modern artists and historians, and which have given us show more a wealth of information on the life of ancient times.'
