Quite different from the centennial historiography of Sidwell Friends School, this book captures an immediacy with in-depth interviews and photographs of memorabilia. Many of the anecdotes collected in that previous volumn are missing here, but so many more abound. The large, coffee-table size of the book makes it difficult to read, but sitting at a table, it actually was a page-turner! I missed reading anecdotes of current faculty, but it is understandable that Zug avoided controversy with show more that avoidance. I'll have to wait for the next volume in fifty years! Ah, but will I be able to wait? I thought the Harrison years received short shrift, and that, I am not so easily able to excuse. Is it because Harrison is bookended by two living Heads of School? Or because there was little to highlight? After 20 years as Head, that seems difficult to believe.

American Traveler: The Life and Adventures of John Ledyard, the Man Who Dreamed of Walking The World by James Zug
"Called a "man of genius" by his close friend Thomas Jefferson, John Ledyard led, by any standard, a remarkable life."
