Comprehensive? Hardly. Exhaustive might be a better word. I can't imagine the amount of time and dedication needed to produce this book. The photographic process alone is staggering. As are the photos and information about each species as well as beetles in general. As a casual bug enthusiast this book is great for figuring out what little critter I'm looking at. The only thing I'd change is the binding and the covers. I've had to tape the edges already to keep them from fraying apart.

If you are interested in beetles (and you should be) this book is a must-read! The full-page, gorgeous, brightly colored photographs made me audibly gasp. The text provides both fascinating detail on specific insects (did you know lightening bugs can help us in the search for alien life?) and a good, foundational understanding of biological concepts such as taxonomy, evolution, and symbiosis. While designed as an appreciation of beetles from a biologist's standpoint, I would highly encourage show more artists to pick up this book as well. There is much inspiration to be found in the colors, shapes, and patterns of the most biologically successful animal on earth. show less

The pictures in this guide are really good and it includes for a lot of species of butterflies the corresponding caterpillar.
