Refreshingly different

I love the art, and the feel of Percy's bizarre and melancholy world, and the dialogue is chock-full of quotable gems - I'm almost sorry to have read a dead-tree edition that I can't easily click'n'share from.

For those who have questioned the author's message, I'm not sure there needs to be one. Someone described this book as "Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland meets Terry Gilliam's Brazil" and that's a pretty good description of what I got from it.

Very highly recommended.
Percy Gloom is an odd character. When you first meet him you'll wonder just what you've come across but in time like me you'll come to love him. Percy leaves home in order to land his dream job writing cautionary literature for Safely Now but finds himself drawn into a world he doesn't understand.
Percy Gloom has been described as Satire, Nightmare, or possibly a Fairy tale for adults but none of these quite describes the unique experience of reading Cathy Malkasian's first book. I will show more definitely be looking out for this author in the future. show less
I've read many graphic novels, and this one comes near the top of my list for one of the best comics I've read. It's a very surreal story that touches on many themes (our destructive nature, selective memory, living with and under abuse, fear & lies, etc.). It doesn't necessarily close with a straight forward ending, but rather something to interpret and dwell upon. I would consider this book to be a work of art, something that reflects many aspects of humanity, something which stretches our show more brains as we follow a very odd story and try to understand the insights revealed in it. show less
It looks like I took a long time to read this book, but actually it sad on my floor for a couple weeks and then I read it in an hour.
There is a lot to love about this book. The illustrations are dreamy and beautiful, the facial expressions are just lovely, and I love Eartha as a protagonist. She's naive but emotionally intelligent, empathetic, and loyal. I think I liked all the individual characters more than the story they were embedded in. There was something about it that felt a little show more lacking to me, but I liked the backstory of the city and the fjord, and the general niceness of it all. show less
