2005 03 03 - Kid Koala's Short Attention Span Theatre, Metro Theater, Sydney, Australia by Kid Koala
Kid Koala's Short Attention Span Theatre Metro Theatre Sydney, Australia 3 February 2005 Featuring Kid Koala, DJ P-Love, DJ Jester Sony D7 DAT w/Sony ECM-DS70P Mic > CDR > AIFF > FLAC One of the most talented and inventive turntablists alive...check him out! From the press info: Kid Koala describes this new 3 hour long, 3 DJ, 8 turntable, piano, slide, video, and electronic show; "It's inspired by episodes of 'The Muppet Show' and 'Monty Python's Flying Circus'. I imagined if all the Muppets show more bought turntables and did an episode of the show on stage it might end up a little like this. There are loud moments, there are melancholy moments and there are silly moments. It's DJ Jester, P-Love and myself with 8 turntables set up in five turntable stations like a band (one for each layer of the track) and we have to move around between the different stations depending on what we're doing on each track. On some tracks I'll be doing drums and piano so there's a lot of running around which is all part of the fun. The whole thing is set up so you can figure out where all the sounds are coming from and which DJ's are doing what. It keeps it pretty dynamic that way. There's a drum turntable set up, there's a solo turntable set up and there's two sets of piano turntables. There's also a piano on-stage which we use to do some of the piano and turntable routines from the 'Nufonia Must Fall' soundtrack and we're doing a slide show to introduce the audience to some of the characters from the books and to set the scene for some of the musical pieces. We've also got some short animated films by Monkmus. They're really demented! There's one about a wine drinking pterodactyl and there's one about inflatable crocodiles and cockroaches flying into space." 1 Intro and unknown track 1 2 Scratchcratchratchatch 1 3 Scratchcratchratchatch 2 4 Monkmus film 1 5 unknown track 2 (Amon Tobin) 6 Nufonia Must Fall Slideshow 7 Page 275 8 Page 247 9 Annie's Parlor 10 Monkmus film 2 11 Louis Armstrong Blues 12 Moon River 13 Monkmus film 3 14 unknown track 3 15 unknown track 4 16 unknown track 5 17 The Girl is Mine 18 Skanky Panky 19 Vacation Island TT: 78:28 OK, I'll start by saying this was an AMAZING performance. What you'll be getting here is the show minus three things: 1) Warm-up act 'Lederhosen Lucil', a novelty act featuring a woman in a Heidi wig and (you guessed it) lederhosen, playing a Yamaha synth and singing faux-german-accented versions of rock tunes done beer-hall-cum-80's-electropop style. Didn't work for me, but some seemed to enjoy it. 2) Second set was a solo set by DJ Jester, who is very talented on the wheels, but a bit too much of an easy joke...set a lot of mid-seventies' country music to a hip-hop beat, always with a smirk... 3) I omitted the Bingo game which was played mid Koala set...everyone was issued a Bingo card (two of them are scanned here for you) and the winner won some merchandise. Cuts 10 minutes from the show, and so in all, it fits nicely on one CD. If anyone can identify the unknown tracks, please pipe up! I must credit Kid Koala for making me like the jazz standard that I could never get with, no matter how cool the musician: Moon River. Check out what he and P-Love do with it; it left me agape. Since there were a lot of visuals onstage, there will be some bits that won't translate to audio-only; if you're a big KK fan, get the whole thing, but for those who don't want to hear the 10 minute slideshow narration (showing images from his 'Nufonia Must Fall' book), you can choose not to download Track 6. The animated films by Monkmus are also recorded here for their sound, which are all short enough to be interesting little atmospheres. The sound is decent but not fantastic...the Metro has possibly the worst acoustics of any club I've ever been in, and that's saying a lot. But it sounds better on tape than it did standing there, as the sound in person was a muddy swirl. I hope you enjoy this. Please leave feedback, it keeps us seeders wanting to post more shows, and remember: SEED SEED SEED....keep them windows a'runnin'! ciao seasob show less

The show--designed as a great venue for a first date--featured seating, candlelit tables, and soft lighting. This was the final performance of the US tour, and Kid Koala hung around afterward to sign autographs and meet the fans. In attendance (but not on stage) were Cut Chemist & D-Styles. All of the non-music parts of this show have been edited out (40 minutes) including an intermission and 10 minutes of "Nufonia Bingo." show less
