Doughnuts by Lara Feroni

YUM! Guess what I want right now? DOUGHNUTS! With recipes that range from simple to complex and sweet to savory there are recipes for children, adults, vegans, gluten-intolerant and just those looking for something from another country there is no doubt in my mind that there is something for everyone who has a sweet tooth.

I am in awe and if still making doughnuts for children, or not worried about calories, I would snap this book up in a heartbeat. It has a variety show more of doughs, glazes and flavorings that left my mouth watering. I would love to try a few of these recipes and serve them to friends and just may at some point in the future. I do have a mini-donut maker and donut pans to put into the oven. Now, which recipe should I try first?

Thank you to NetGalley and Sasquatch Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.

There's nothing quite as satisfying as the guilt-inducing taste of a fresh-made doughnut, be it fried or baked, the traditional round-with-hole, or filled. This book's attractive cover caught my eye on the library's "new books" displays and the thin size convinced me to give it a read. In the first 1/2 of the book, Ferroni presents the basic recipes that form the core of her building palette -- including doughnuts from other cultures, such as crullers and/or sopapillas (just to name a few). show more The rest of this handy little volume is variations in flavors and textures, including numerous glaze flavors, accompanied by mouth-watered photographs of the end products. She finished off with a bibliography listing sources for special tools and ingredients for the kitchen geeks among us. I'll have to admit, though I love Krispy Kremes, I lean more toward baked doughnuts, and about 1/3 of the recipes here give me inspiration for trying a few new baked doughnuts at home. Recipes that jumped out at me included Margarita, German Chocolate and Creme Brulee!

Since I love to cook and bake, and have made doughnuts in the past, I thought I'd look and see if this book has anything new. Not only does it have what's listed above, but there are also recipes for doughnuts that are gluten-free (although I have to admit I haven't made those). But it's there for those who haven't been able to find recipes before.

To tell the truth, yes, it's easier to just go and purchase doughnuts from a store; but you're going to get ones that have tons of preservatives show more in them and there's no guarantee that you won't find ones that don't taste like what they are - out of a box. While many of these recipes take time and effort, the end result is you're going to get a very nice doughnut indeed with great taste. Recommended. show less
these were fancier/more labor intensive than I ever care to make, but it looks like she put some effort into developing a gluten-free version of her biscuit/empanada dough that I haven't tried yet, but which might have been just what I was looking for. That is the only GF recipe in the bunch, however, so people with this dietary restriction should probably borrow from the library rather than purchase.
