Puppy is awakened by the sound of "meow," which he hasn't heard before. He looks throughout the house and outside to find the source of this strange new noise.

This is a cute book that is apparently based on a Russian cartoon. Puppy comes across a variety of incorrect animals and the reader learns their sounds instead. The text is somewhat repetitive but not entirely, which is a nice balance for little ones (who enjoy repetition) and their adult caregivers (who sometimes get bored of show more repeating the same line over and over again with no variation).

The illustrations help to tell the story, although they do look a little bit dated in their style. Young readers love these kinds of illustrations though that reveal to them what the main character is missing (in this case the little kitten who somehow always just out of Puppy's sightlines.
