The Hiking Companion: Getting the most from the trail experience throughout the seasons: where to go, what to bring, basic navigation, and backpacking by Michael W. Robbins
This is an introductory book on the topic of hiking. The author covers a variety of general topics which come up when discussing hiking, or about to go hiking.
The scope is strictly limited to the United States> Even Canada is not mentioned anywhere.

But when covering basics locale is not the focus anyway. Robbins does discuss differences in hiking styles and needs with hikes occurring in different environments, such as desert, snow country, various seasons and so on.
