Puzzles, used for an international competition for both English and non-English speakers, are hence basically logic puzzles. Even those puzzles with words use the letters as different random symbols; the meaning of the words is irrelevant. Personally I prefer word puzzles that play with the meanings of words.
For a suduko book, this book is huge. It has 300 puzzles ranging in difficulty from very easy to very hard. I found it very challenging and was always able to find a puzzle to suit the amount of time I had available. The author, Will Shortz, is the NYT crossword puzzle editor and has spent his entire adult life designing, studying, authoring, and editing puzzles and puzzle books.
This book offers some interesting insights to crossword buffs, but would probably not be particularly interesting to the public at large. Will Shortz is a pretty neat guy, though.
I like Will Shortz' puzzles. I find that they rarely get me to a point where I am forced to "guess.' I prefer to be able to solve the puzzles with logic, rather than process of elimination.
