Davis (1923-1999) was one of the leading Roman Catholic theologians in England, actively involved in Vatican II. His reasons were neither doctrinal, although he notes changing views on Infallibility, Mariology, and other issues, nor was it in order to wed (usually the stock reason suspected for anyone leaving the priesthood). It seems instead that he was frustrated by hopes that the council raised, which he could see being dashed, as the church clung to its heirarchy. A good read.
