I only read the introduction whose main themes are; the uncertainty over who exactly John was, but that he was an author who had access to the earlier synoptic gospels and chose to write a new form of the story of Jesus for a new generation and community; his gospel was more universally directed towards Jew, gentile and pagan; and that he directed his work to the simple believer, at the same time as drawing out the substance at the core of Christian belief.
