The second of the Monkees albums where the band had creative control. This time around they're less shy about utilizing their resources, so it has a similar level of polish to their early albums. Their taste isn't great all the time, but at least the bad songs are well-executed bad songs, and they do enough experimental stuff to keep things interesting.

This is the album where The Monkees play their own instruments (just to prove they could, I guess?). Unfortunately, when the band took creative control, they tried to make a clean break and threw out most of the great material they were being handed.

Three of the Monkees each do their own thing - presumably with no one to tell them to do better. Apart from Daydream Believer (a single from the previous year), I don't think any Monkees ever had to see another Monkee during the making of this album.
