- The author was Professor of German at the University of Sussex, from 1965. He frequently lectured at universities in Britain, Germany and the U.S.A. and wrote a number of books on Medieval and Romantic topics, chief among which were The Songs of Neidhart von Reuental (with A. T. Hatto, 1958); E. T. A. Hoffmann (1963); Die weltlichen Lieder des Mittelalters (2 volumes, 1964): The Art of the Minnesinger (2 volumes, 1968); and The Romantic Tradition in Germany (1970).
