A former student of mine would call this book a romantasy. I am usually not big on romance novels in any form. There has to be something mysterious or different going on in the story. That is probably why I was never a fan of the Harlequin romance stories. I didn’t get into the mushy, gushy side of it. I never really felt like they had a strong plot thread. This book is different.
Emily, previously known as Charity and her “family” have moved to Telluride, Colorado. They have to move show more every few years to keep up appearances. They are immortals with special abilities. You can imagine the issue this could cause for a relationship. In addition to all of that Charity and her family is going through, they are being hunted by two brothers whose sole job is to hunt down immortals.
Charity usually stays to herself. She isolates herself because it is so much easier. She begins school makes friends fairly easy. Then she meets Link, another new student. There seems to be a connection between Link and Charity. I told you Charity was an immortal, but Link is not. This adds another complicated layer to the story. The author has created a story that shows well developed world building as well as well developed characters. It truly has everything you could want. It has the romance, if you are into that. It has the mystery/supernatural side. This is what kept me reading even though it is a romance. As I read this book, I kept thinking about how difficult it is being a teen. The tension is raised because Charity not only has to live the life of a teen, but she has had to do this numerous times. I teach teens and every day with them is a reminder of what my teen years were like. I would not want to relive that life over and over again. So, if you are into supernatural romances, then you will definitely want to check out this book. As a supernatural romance, it has a bit of something for everyone.

It took me a while to warm up to this book. Emily's/Charity's voice wasn't the most exciting voice to hear from. Let's go with Charity, Charity was dull and uninteresting for the most part until Link appeared. Maybe that was the intention of the author but it wasn't Charity that made this book interesting, Link brought a lot of relief to this book, he made Charity seem more interesting, he was charming, a little humorous, and supposedly a looker.

I wasn't sure how or when Link would show up show more in the story but I was pleasantly surprised that he was not a high school student like Charity. It made sense since Charity is actually older than seventeen.

The setting for this story also added another depth to the story, a good one. Telluride is a small skiing town in Colorado, the next hideout for the Johnston family.

In this book you can find almost every supernatural being you've come across in other paranormal novels. Vampires, witches, shapeshifters, you name it. As each being appeared in the book, the story takes a new direction and made it even more enjoyable.

I would say that the book got more and more interesting as it progressed. The concept was interesting so I was not bored out of my wits and was able to keep reading. As new characters appear the story got better and Charity's voice became more alive. Charity did come across as a seventeen year old not as someone pretending to be seventeen. I didn't get maturity or an old soul from her at all except for her dialogue saying she is a lot older than she seems. With my expertise from reading Twilight (lol) I know that supernatural beings should be able to blend into society seamlessly and not have any screw ups, but Charity could not get the knack of being human down, she kept forgetting to blend in. Now I can laugh about that, I should have realized that it was pretty funny, her forgetting to not be superhuman or much less her name.

Not a bad read at all.

This book was a shock for me! I picked it up since I saw it was free. I assumed it was going to be another sorting of society through teens, but quickly saw it was so much more! The idea behind this book is so much more than it seems! I read this months ago, but my mind still returns to it often. I am now in search of the second book, since I realized I need to know what happens next, even after all of this time. In a world of YA books that all copy one another, this takes a new idea and show more spin on things. It is what you love from Hunger Games and Divergent but in a new way that will keep you reading and hoping!!! show less
