Juan J. Linz (1926–2013)

The authors edited a number of articles pertaining to the Chilean political landscape in the 1970's when the popular movements achieved a great measure of power and (socialist) Salvador Allende was elected president. The articles address political constraints regarding attempts at profound reforms, the electoral process, the movement of the government to the left, Allende's Chile, the labor movement, the transformation of the countryside, foreign capital, and the US reaction to the Allende's show more election, which clearly contributed to the downfall of his Popular Unity government in 1973 via a brutal coup carried out by the Chilean armed forces and the police, which lasted until 1990 show less

I took a course from Dr. Linz just as these texts came out. His deep understanding, extraordinary common sense, and fundamental decency made a great impression on me.
