One of my first Astronomy Books, bought new (cost £1.10shillings =£1.50 decimal) - Pre moon landings - pre space telescopes - Pre digital imaging & computer image enhancement - No mention of plate tectonics / continental drift - Still a good starter for basic astronomy BUT also useful as a history of science volume -
All photographs, drawings & diagrams in monchrome, apart from front and back cover -
Indeholder "Introduction", "Book I. The splendour of the heavens", "Book II. The empire of the sun", "Book III. The realm of the stars", "Book IV. Astronomical Instruments and techniques".
Book I indeholder. "1. Stars in space", "2. Our observatory, the Earth".
Book II indeholder "3. The solar system", "4. The Earth as a planet", "5. The Moon", "6. Eclipses, occultations and tides", "7. The planets", "8. Comets", "9. Meteors and meteorites", "10. The Sun", "11. In Space".
Book III indeholder show more "12. The stars in the sky", "13. Double and variable stars", "14. The stars as suns", "15. The nature of the stars", "16. The galaxy", "17. The extra-galactic nebulae end the expansion of the universe", "18. Past and future".
Book IV indeholder "19. Instruments and methods of measurements", "20. Spectroscopic analysis and its astronomical applications", "21. The philosophical, scientific and technical value of astronomy".
Colour plates indeholder "1. General map of the Moon", "2. Total eclipse of the Moon", "III. The planet Mars", "IV. The planet Jupiter", "V. The planet Saturn", "VI. A solar prominence", "VII. Stars of different magnitudes", "VIII. The constellations of the northern hemisphere", "IX. The constellations of the southern hemisphere", "The constellations of the equatorial zone", "XI. Coloured multiple stars", "XII. Principles of spectroscopic analysis".

Ganske skæg at læse, men ret håbløst forældet.
