Unable to decide whether it is a novel or a history lesson and with a condescending slant towards rural Ireland, this book works on some levels while failing on others. Flawed mediocrity. The story is interesting enough and the prose is servicable and only sometimes seems embarassed by outbreaks of formality. Some PoV and tense discipline would not have gone amiss but it is still an ok effort.
While reading, I had to think of Brysons A walk in the woods, about the Appalachian Trail. The author of Walking the Corfu Trail also plans to walk the complete Corfu trail, but in the end it appears that he and his companions have walked only a (very large) part of it. In this I was disappointed a little. However, if you have ever visited Corfu, like me, you will like the book very much, and you'll start to recognize the different parts of the island. We even found out that, thanks to this show more book, a restaurant we were looking for in Lefkimmi had actually closed! show less
