It's too bad this little-known fantasy is out of print, but it's not surprising -- the mixture of fantasy and SF, and grim fantasy-like society, feels very 80s, but it holds up well. Slaves in a non-technological society fear being sent off for food processing (more alluded to than described). The intricacies of the protagonist's life as a slave are well-told, and the surprising humanity and pain of the observers was well done.
